Changing Your Furnace Filter
(For return air drop filter locations)
NOTE: For many years, (and the 30,000 furnace installations we
have done,) we have been installing most of our filters in the
return air filter drop alongside the furnace in order for our
clients to be able to easily maintain their filter changes.
These instructions are assuming the use of a Purolator High Capacity Pleated Filter of some type…
- Turn your furnace OFF at the thermostat (system & fan switches).
- Go to your furnace / mechanical room location (normally in the basement area). (Take one of your new filters with you…store remainder of filters somewhere close by in the mechanical room!)
- Look for the return air filter drop / duct. (It typically is the duct that “drops” down alongside your furnace – could be on either side of the furnace).
- Pull up & remove the “slide- type door”, located towards the bottom of the return air drop. (BE CAREFUL!…THE SHEETMETAL CAN CUT YOU!)
- You should be able to see your existing filter lying diagonally inside the return air drop.
- Remove the old filter and throw it away!
- Place the new filter inside the return air drop diagonally; with the bottom of filter on the lower outside corner of the return air drop. Lean the top of the filter against “furnace side” of the return air drop.
- With “pleated filters”, the pleats should be running vertical (or up & down), and any metal support mesh should be on the under side of the filter after it is in position. Any “arrows” on the filter should be pointing downwards and towards the furnace.
- Replace the filter door. Post the date of this filter change on your filter change “sticker” above the filter door. If applicable, reset the filter timer on your thermostat or filter performance indicator.
- If you need help…call our office at 303-463-5911 or 303-423-1982 and any of our Four Seasons folks will help you with how to change your filter.
